Rathergate: CBS Axes Four

To use a Ratherism, the chickens have come home to roost at CBS: following the release of their independent investigation of the "60 Minutes Wednesday" forged documents story, four CBS executives were fired Monday: Mary Mapes, producer of the report; Josh Howard, executive producer of "60 Minutes Wednesday"; his right-hand, Mary Murphy; and senior vice president Betsy West.

Mr. Rather himself escaped the guillotine, but the scandal has effectively already cost him his CBS Evening News anchor chair.

5 other geekspeak:

  • The report is a cover up. The 4 fired are junior "execs". To say the smear was not politicaly motivated is a lie. But look at the 2 men on the panel - both long time Bush haters. Dan not fired; no Sr. execs fired! A whitewash!

  • Whereas I agree that Dan should maybe have gotten the chop, you can't argue that an Executive Producer isn't a "senior executive."

  • i have to agree to some extent with anonymous. i can't imagine that heyward didn't know about the content of this highly accusatory broadcast. how could he not know? he should be gone.

  • Considering that Rather has already "stepped down" I think you could argue that he did get the axe.

  • He is still employed at CBS, however.
