Koppel Kwitz

Ted Koppel announced today that he will leave ABC when contract expires at the end of the year.

This will certainly begin wild speculation about Nightline and its desirable 11:30 time slot. It's been long rumored that ABC would like to put a younger skewing entertainment show in its place.

1 other geekspeak:

  • ABC apparantly shot a pilot last month for a Nightline replacement called ABC X2 (Times Square).

It apparantly had male and female co-hosts, with a jazz band, giving it a nightclub-like feel while they did the news. This was likely one of many pilots from the ABC news and entertainment divisions to replace Nightline.

There has also been talk of ESPN producing a late night show for ABC, but there's fear that it would compete with Sportscenter. ESPN has had some experience with that with Cold Pizza on ESPN2, yet Sportscenter reruns continue to get higher ratings.

I say ABC moves Jimmy Kimmel Live to 11:30. In 2009, when Conan takes over the Tonight Show, Kimmel will have been on the air for 7 years (assuming he's not fired). The show's had growing momentum at the 12AM slot and would do a lot better if it moved to 11:30. Plus, you don't know when Letterman is going to retire, although he jokes that he will stay on the air one day later than Leno.
