TV on DVD: This Week's New Releases

Useless TV on DVD Release of the Week:
Ned and Stacey: The Complete 1st Season

Sure, Thomas Haden Church is suddenly hot again. But this show blew chunks. And haven't we all had enough Debra Messing?

Other releases out today:

Andromeda: Vol 5.1
The Batman: Season 1, Vol. 2: The Man Who Would Be Bat
Battlestar Galactica: Season 1
Clone High: Season 1
Crime Story: Season 2
Desperate Housewives: The Complete 1st Season
From the Earth to the Moon (mini-series): Signature Edition
Justice League: Unlimited - Season 1, Volume 2: Joining Forces
The Man Show: Boy & Household Hints From Adult Film Stars
Ned and Stacey: The Complete 1st Season
Penn & Teller: Magic and Mystery Tour (mini-series): Penn & Teller: Magic & Mystery Tour
The Pretender: The Complete 2nd Season
The Ren and Stimpy Show: Season 5 and Some More of 4
SpongeBob SquarePants: Absorbing Favorites

2 other geekspeak:

  • What's the logic in releasing the Desperate Housewives season of 30 or so episodes only FIVE DAYS before the season premiere? They're not going to get many new fans that way, since they won't have time to watch the entire set between now and Sunday.

Why not release DVD sets of hit shows in July, when the creative level on TV falls, so somebody can watch the entire season at their own pace, in time for the new season to start....

  • I think their thought is, they can integrate DVD mentions into promotion for the new season- print ads, press, etc- and create interest that way. HBO does this very successfully each time they launch a new season of one of their hit shows (the current billboards for the new season of Curb Your Enthusiasm, for example, contain DVD mentions).

But from a viewer standpoint- I agree. I would have liked to catch up on Housewives or Veronica Mars- but the release schedule didn;t allow me enough time. Unless I want to clog my TiVo with new eposides while I watch the old ones. :-)
